The Fruit Hunter

The Fruit Hunter

It was the summer of 2009 in Santa Cruz, California.  I lay on my beach towel, near the waves on Seabright

Beach with my girlfriend, sun blistering down on our bronzed summer bodies.  As we bit into tangy oranges,

juice running down our chins, I opened the book that ignited a different kind of curiosity and passion that I'd not yet experience, The

Fruit Hunters, by Adam Leith Gollner.

As I read of ‘A machete-toting coconut vendor, noticing my tentative nibbling of a maracuja’s bitter skin,

slicesthe orb in half and shows me how to slurp up the lavender-fruit-punch viscera’, I longed for the

adventure of finding a fruit I’d never seen, tasted nor heard of ever before.

With each page I turned, I found new delightful fruit facts, exclaiming in awe to Jess, ‘Did you know that

Strawberries are in fact not a fruit?!’

Like opening a treasure chest, I fell into his world of Fruit Hunting travel tales.

My Little Green Thumb

From starting seeds, taking cuttings or hunting through every nursery, local or abroad, I collect plants, with an emphasis on fruiting (of course).  I have a small greenhouse that is all but full already.  Bursting with orchids, begonias, lemongrass, figs, a coffee tree, four passion fruit vines, ten citrus varieties, a longan tree, a starfruit tree, and so many more.
